Artificiële intelligentie zorgt ervoor dat de relatie tussen mens en maatschappij diepgaand verandert. Nieuwe technologieën hebben potentieel om een positieve impact op de maatschappij te hebben. Toch mogen we ook niet blind zijn voor de gevaren ervan. De investeringen en het onderzoek van militaire grootmachten naar autonome wapensystemen is zo één van die gevaren. Het zou ertoe kunnen leiden dat de beslissing over leven of dood niet langer door een mens genomen wordt, maar in de handen van machines valt. Feilbare algoritmische berekeningen zorgen voor digitale dehumanisering. Wat als het fout loopt? Wie is er verantwoordelijk? En zijn machines in staat ethische en morele beslissingen te maken over leven en dood?
De voorbije jaren vonden binnen de VN uitvoerige gesprekken plaats over een verbod op autonome wapensystemen. Ook België nam actief deel aan deze gesprekken. In december is het moment aangebroken waarop landen hier eindelijk over zullen moeten beslissen. De technologische ontwikkelingen gaan snel, de tijd dringt!
Op 10 november gaan we daarom in gesprek met:
- De Campaign to Stop Killer Robots
De internationale Campaign to Stop Killer Robots, die ondertussen meer dan 180 organisaties wereldwijd telt, ijvert ervoor dat de menselijke controle over het gebruik van geweld steeds bewaard blijft. De enige manier om dit te doen is door een nieuw internationaal verdrag te sluiten.
- Tony Belpaeme – Prof. Dr. Robotica (UGent & University of Plymouth)
Prof. Belpaeme focust in zijn onderzoek op cognitieve robotica. Op die manier gaat hij op zoek naar de wetenschap en technologie rond artificiële intelligentie en interacties tussen mens en robot. Hij gaat niet alleen op zoek naar de theorie maar probeert deze ook steeds op een maatschappijrelevante manier toe te passen.

Artificial intelligence ensures that the relationship between people and society changes profoundly. New technologies have the potential to have a positive impact on society. Yet we should not be blind to its dangers either. The investments and research of military powers into autonomous weapon systems is one of those dangers. It could mean that the decision about life or death is no longer made by humans, but falls into the hands of machines. Fallible algorithmic calculations lead to digital dehumanization. What if it goes wrong? Who is responsible? And are machines capable of making ethical and moral decisions about life and death?
In recent years, extensive discussions have taken place within the UN about a ban on autonomous weapon systems. Belgium also took an active part in these discussions. In December, the time has come when countries will finally have to decide on this. Technological developments are moving fast, time is running out!
On November 10, we will therefore talk to:

The international Campaign to Stop Killer Robots, which now numbers more than 180 organizations worldwide, strives to ensure that human control over the use of force is always preserved. The only way to do this is by signing a new international agreement.
- Tony Belpaeme – Prof. dr. dr. Robotics (UGent & University of Plymouth)
Prof. dr. In his research, Belpaeme focuses on cognitive robotics. In this way he searches for the science and technology surrounding artificial intelligence and interactions between humans and robots.
